I’m YiLin and am from Taiwan. I trained and worked as a graphic designer when I was in Taiwan. I discovered my passion for making jewellery when I was 17 years old, and at the time only made jewellery for myself.

I came to the UK in 2001, were I worked in a department store as a sales assistant, while also making jewellery for friends as a hobby.

YiLin began in 2012, where I rented a stall in Canterbury Market to sell my handmade jewellery two days a week. Within three months, I had quit my job and was doing a stall three days a week, having realised where my creative passion truly lay. It was liberating working for myself, slightly nerve-wracking, but also very exciting.

With my husband’s support and encourage; (Ben, my husband, made display boards and helped me to setup and pack up the stall while doing his teacher job) for what soon become a rather full stall, mixing my creations with items I like enough to buy in.

After five demanding but rewarding years for both of us, we found the perfect place for a shop – 18 Sun street, Canterbury, which we opened in 2017. We were a family business from the first moment, and now it was my husband’s turn to stop working as a teacher, and join the business full time.

We are now a partnership in every sense of the word: he works in the shop, still making our displays, and I concentrate on making and sourcing the jewellery, plus running our website. We even have three wonderful part-time members of staff, including our son.

It’s been a fabulous journey, and it’s far from over! To our many loyal customers in Canterbury, and to our new customers online, thank you so much for your support in the story of YiLin.
